What is Ayurveda?

The name “Ayurveda” is derived from two words in Sanskrit, “ayuh” meaning “life” or “longevity” and “veda” meaning “science” or “sacred knowledge.” Ayurveda’s definition therefore roughly translates as “the science of longevity” or “the sacred knowledge of life.”

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and the use of herbs. Knowledge of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create this balance of body, mind and consciousness according to one’s own individual constitution and how to make lifestyle changes to bring about and maintain this balance.

A Brief History of Ayurvedic Science

Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.” The earliest known references to Ayurveda and its sister science, Yoga, appeared in scholarly texts from the time called “the Vedas.”

The period between 800 BCE and 1000CE was the Golden Age of Indian medicines. This was the time when all the important books on Ayurveda were produced and circulated throughout the world. Ayurveda not only gained popularity among the Indians but the information on the traditional systems of Indian medicine became popular amongst Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, Roman, Persians, Arabs, and Tibetans who travelled to India during that time. They studied Ayurveda in India and the carried this valuable knowledge to the irrespective countries.

Through its scientific approach to human life, Ayurveda works to harness the intricate abilities of human body and mind.

Principles of Ayurveda

Healthcare is a highly individualized practiceunder Ayurvedic principles, which state that everyone has a specificconstitution, or prakrutithat determineshis or her physical, physiologic and mental character and disease vulnerabilityPrakruti is determined by three "bodily energies" called doshas. There are three basic doshas, and though everyone has some features of each, most people have one or two that predominate.

Pitta

Energy is linked to fire, and is thought tocontrol the digestive and endocrine systems. People with pitta energy areconsidered fiery in temperament, intelligent and fast-paced. Whenpitta energy is out of balance, ulcers, inflammation, digestive problems, anger, heartburn and arthritis can result.

Vata

Energy is associated with air and space, and islinked to bodily movement, including breathing and blood circulation.Vata energy is said to predominate in people who are lively, creative, original thinkers. When out-of-balance, vata types can endure joint pain, constipation, dry skin, anxiety and other ailments.

Kapha

Energy, linked to earth and water, is believed to control growth and strength, and is associated with the chest, torso and back. Kapha types are considered strong and solid in constitution, and generally calm in nature. But obesity, diabetes, sinus problems, insecurity and gallbladder issues can result when kapha energy is out of balance, according to Ayurvedic practitioners.
